How did you get into the farrier business?
In 2023, I needed a job, and my friend’s parents needed a stable hand, so I went to work. After a year of mucking stalls, throwing hay, and turning out horses, I decided I wanted a career in the equine world, but without shoveling poop all the time. Out of all the other jobs I saw around the stable - from trainers to riders and chiropractors - I decided the farrier’s job seemed most interesting. None of the farriers at the barn wanted to take on an apprentice, but one of them told me to ask around the local farrier supply shop. So I did! I walked in, said I needed an apprenticeship, and an old man standing in the checkout line said he needed someone with a strong back. His name is Scott Booton, and I’ve been learning from him and others ever since! So in short, I got into the farrier business through a love of horses, and Scott Booton!
Where do you work?
I’m based out of Boulder, Colorado, but I travel all up and down the front range, even into Colorado Springs. If you’re in Colorado, I am probably able and willing to travel to you.
What are your rates?
Each animal requires a different level of hoof care, and my rates reflect those needs. Barefoot trims cost about $60 per animal, and a basic full shoe costs about $120. As a general rule, bigger (draft) horses cost slightly more, and smaller (pony) horses cost less. Additional materials, tools, and travel time will also add to the overall rate, but I try to be fair and flexible.
